WZC Prinsenhof investeert in innovatieve technologie voor een betere zorgkwaliteit

Now that COVID is more under control, the local government of Rijkevorsel is turning words into action to support healthcare. It is investing in smart sensors and a vendor-independent alarm server for Woonzorgcentrum Prinsenhof. With this investment, the aim is to ease the workload of care staff and improve the quality of care for residents.

While these types of sensors have already been widely adopted in the Netherlands, WZC Prinsenhof is one of the first residential care centres in Belgium to start working with this technology.

Smart sensors help prevent incidents

The smart sensors are designed to detect potential irregularities in residents’ rooms. When an irregularity occurs, care staff are immediately notified so they can respond quickly and appropriately. For example, if someone stays in the bathroom longer than usual, the system triggers an alert via the sensors. The resident may have fallen or something else could be wrong. With these smart sensors, potential incidents can be prevented proactively.

The sensors can also be tailored to individual residents. Some residents with dementia, for example, may tend to wander at night. The sensors allow staff to intervene immediately when a resident gets out of bed. We’re taking this even further: a pilot setup is currently being prepared to test wandering detection using facial recognition technology.

Thanks to this sensor technology, staff gain more time to focus on personalized care. The sensors also enable the replacement of physical night rounds with digital ones. By reducing the need for routine checks and unnecessary walking rounds, staff workload is lowered—leaving more time and energy for residents who need it most. What’s more, residents are no longer disturbed during the night, ensuring more restful sleep thanks to the digital night rounds.

A central and accessible alarm server

The second part of the investment involves the purchase of the vendor-independent alarm server IQ Messenger. This investment allows us to connect various systems and ensures that all nurse calls and alerts are clearly routed to the appropriate caregiver.

A major advantage is the ability to configure our workflows exactly as we want them. An additional benefit is the centralization of everything on a single platform, making the solution both accessible and user-friendly for care staff. In this way, technology offers optimal support for the delivery of care.

In this initial phase, sixteen sensors have been installed in the residential care centre. Since every room is equipped with a connection point, the system can be deployed in any room where needed. Resident privacy is a key priority throughout this process. Before the system is activated, a consultation is held with the resident or their legal representative.

The staff at WZC Prinsenhof are enthusiastic about the system and see it as a tremendous support in their daily work. For this investment, we partnered with Delta Care, who ensured a smooth and flawless implementation.
