Fewer alerts at Saxenburgh Medical Centre with IQ Messenger Medical

Saxenburgh Medical Centre is a brand new hospital in Hardenberg (The Netherlands) with a total of 130 beds. In order to realise an innovative care environment they have chosen the vendor-independent medical class IIb certified IQ Messenger platform as alarm server in combination with system integrator Effecta. They make use of various IQ Messenger Medical applications. For easy assignment of alarms they use the Graphical Event Assignment (GEA). On another IQ Messenger Medical application, the Graphical Floor Plan (GFP), there is a real-time visualization of alarms on the floor plan of the building or department. With the GFP they can also send alarm messages and start events.

From classical to modern device for alarms

In the old situation Saxenburgh used old fashioned DECT and WiFi devices for alarms. They migrated from these classic devices to modern smart devices from Spectralink. The Spectralink devices run the IQ Messenger Medical SmartApp, on which nurses receive the alarm messages. With the SmartApp, employees no longer need to carry two or more devices in their pocket or use different alarm apps. Employees experience uniformity thanks to one alarm application for messages from the nurse call system, monitors and infusion pumps. The content of the alarms on the SmartApp can be completely designed according to the work process. The icon, colour, ringtone and text are determined by Saxenburgh itself. Recognizability is paramount, so that an employee immediately knows what kind of alarm it is.

Personal alarms for safe working

Nurses also have the option of making a personal alarm via the panic button on the Spectralink device. The alarm with location indication is received by colleagues on the SmartApp so they can immediately come to the rescue. Being able to trigger the alarm anytime and anywhere contributes to a safe working environment. Both receiving all alarm messages, (video) calls, viewing camera images, switching systems on/off, access to the EHR and email as well as making a personal alarm is thus realised with one and the same device.

Medical alerting IQ Messenger Medical in various departments

The Saxenburgh Medical Centre uses monitors (Philips) and infusion pumps (Bbraun) in the Emergency Department, the Women’s & Childrens department and the ICU. IQ Messenger Medical, as a medical class IIb certified platform, is authorised to process alarm messages from these medical devices. This certification means that the entire chain is monitored end-to-end with a guaranteed reliability of 99.99%. Nurses experience the advantages of deploying IQ Messenger Medical for secure primary and secondary medical alarms on a daily basis. They also make use of the integration with a classic nurse call system. This integration makes it possible to filter nurse call alarms and send them to the right employee. This functionality contributes to the reduction of alarm fatigue because employees only receive alarms that are relevant to them.
